    PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Squalamine (MSI-1256) is a compound with broad-spectrum antiviral activity. Aminosterol broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs present in shark tissue. A novel indicator for steroids as host defense agents in vertebrates.

It is a natural cationic steroid that inhibits angiogenesis and has been isolated from the tissues of several dogfish sharks (Squalus acanthias). The compound is currently undergoing clinical research on several types of cancer and has recently obtained FDA fast track status for the treatment of "wet" age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It also exhibits strong bactericidal activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, has antifungal properties, and induces osmotic lysis of protozoa.

Squaramine interrupts and reverses multiple aspects of angiogenesis, including VEGF. It also inhibits integrin expression and reverses cytoskeleton formation, leading to endothelial cell inactivation and apoptosis.
